What to consider for your van conversion electrics
Your main consideration for any van conversion electrical system is being able to deliver the required current to where it needs to go in the van. Before you begin, you’ll want to answer some key questions to understand your vehicle’s requirements and necessary equipment. Questions such as:- How much time do you plan to spend in your van?
- How many devices do you want to use?
- Do you want to use appliances that require AC power?
- Will you use mains electric hook-ups all or some of the time?
- Do you want to charge your leisure battery while on the move?
- Do you want to travel or camp off-grid? How long for?
Van conversion power requirements
Your van conversion electrical system needs to be able to deliver enough power to meet your electrical demands, plus a little extra. For that, we recommend grabbing a pen and paper or making a spreadsheet.- Make a list of all the appliances you want to power and their peak amperage.
- Calculate how many hours per day you’ll use each appliance.
- Multiply the peak amperage by the number of hours to calculate the amp-hours (Ah) you’ll need per day for each appliance.
- Add all the amp hours together to get your total power demand.
- Then add 20% to that total as your headroom.

Talking of components, just exactly what do you need for a van conversion electrical system? Every leisure vehicle and electrical system is different, but most van conversions will require:- Leisure battery
- Battery charger or split charger
- Inverter to switch stored DC current to AC power required by most appliances
- Plug or connector for mains pitch power
- Wiring, fuses, connectors, fixtures and fittings
- Optional solar panels and accessories for off-grid ventures
