Refrigerated van conversion FAQs

Are refrigerated vans insulated?

Yes, refrigerated vans are insulated to maintain a consistent cool temperature inside. A fridge van conversion will use a chiller to lower the temperature to the required level.

How do you turn a van into a refrigerated van?

You can turn a van into a refrigerated van by adding adequate insulation and a chiller or refrigeration unit. Some bodywork may be required to fill in windows and strengthen door hinges, and the electrics will need to be upgraded to wire up the chiller. Motorhome Workshop can assist with the electrical system and installing the chiller.

Why should I invest in a specialist fridge van conversion?

Investing in a refrigerated van conversion means you can specify a van that precisely meets your needs. It’s also often much cheaper to convert than buy a purpose-built refrigerated van which is a crucial factor for new business start-ups or companies looking to save money while expanding their fleet of fridge vans.

Are van conversions legal?

Yes, van conversions are legal as long as they conform to DVLA regulations and pass a standard MOT. You don’t necessarily have to inform the DVLA of a refrigerated van conversion but you will need to declare it on your vehicle’s insurance due to its change of purpose. You may also need a licence to drive larger vans. If in doubt, contact the DVLA who can advise you on what you need.

What temperature should a refrigerated van be?

A refrigerated van, or chiller van, should ideally be between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius to keep perishable goods cool, but this depends on what you’re planning to do with your van. Freezer vans are different and need much lower temperatures around -18 degrees.
